Treatment starts with finding out exactly how your foot is behaving, not just confirming that you have flat feet. Custom orthotics are the core of flat feet treatment for most adults. A device with the right medial arch support and heel control corrects the inward roll at the point where it starts. This takes pressure off the ankle, knee, and back without requiring you to change much else about your routine. These are cast or 3D scanned to your foot specifically. And then fabricated from materials like carbon fibre or polypropylene depending on how much correction your foot needs. Footwear guidance matters more than people expect. An excellent orthotic inside the wrong shoe will not do its job. We talk through what you are wearing day to day. This includes work shoes, gym shoes, the sandals you live in at home. Also where a swap would make the orthotic actually effective. Gait retraining is sometimes part of the picture, particularly for patients whose flat feet have led to a compensatory walking pattern that needs correcting alongside the orthotic itself. For children with flexible flat feet, treatment looks a little different. We monitor development, since many children's arches still form naturally, and intervene with supportive devices where the pattern is causing visible problems with balance or persistent complaints of leg pain.

Can flat feet be cured, or only managed?

In adults, a collapsed arch generally cannot be reversed, since the structures that form the arch have already settled into that position. What flat feet treatment does is correct the mechanics causing pain. controlling the overpronation, supporting the arch, and reducing strain on the joints above. In children, the picture can be different, since the arch is still developing.

Do flat feet cause knee or back pain?

They can, though not in everyone. Overpronation changes how force travels up through the ankle and knee, and in some people that translates into pain higher up the leg or in the lower back. If your knee or back pain has not responded to other treatment, it is worth having your feet checked as part of the picture.

Will I need orthotics for the rest of my life?

Many adults wear them long-term because the underlying mechanics do not change without ongoing support. Orthotics typically last 2–4 years before needing replacement, and your prescription may be adjusted over time as your needs change.

Is flat feet treatment covered by insurance?
