AFO Brace UAE

If walking has become difficult — whether because your foot drags, your ankle buckles, or you’ve had a stroke or neurological diagnosis that’s changed how you move — an AFO brace is often what gets you back on your feet safely. It’s one of the most commonly prescribed orthotic devices in rehabilitation medicine, and when it’s fitted properly, the difference in how you walk can be immediate.

At Dynamic Medical Equipment Centre, we’ve been fitting custom AFO braces across the UAE for over 20 years. Every device starts with a clinical assessment of how you walk and what your foot and ankle are actually doing — not a standard size pulled off a shelf.

Conditions we Treat with AFO Braces in UAE

Foot Drop is the most common reason patients are referred to us for an AFO. Foot drop is the inability to lift the front of the foot during walking. It causes the toes to drag, the foot to slap the ground, or the patient to develop a high-stepping gait just to avoid tripping. It can result from a stroke, nerve injury, spinal cord compression, or neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis.

Stroke Rehabilitation: After a stroke, weakness or spasticity on one side of the body frequently affects ankle and foot control. Patients often find themselves unable to lift the affected foot properly, leading to a dragging gait that is both exhausting and unsafe. An AFO supports the affected limb and improves walking speed. It also improves stability, and allows patients to focus on rehabilitation rather than managing each step.

Cerebral Palsy Children and adults with cerebral palsy often experience muscle tightness, spasticity, or weakness that affects how the foot and ankle move. An AFO can hold the foot in a more functional position, reduce the risk of contracture developing over time, and improve the gait pattern significantly. The prescription varies depending on the type of cerebral palsy and the specific movement patterns involved.

Multiple Sclerosis MS can cause progressive weakness and reduced control in the lower limbs, including the foot and ankle. For MS patients experiencing foot drop or ankle instability, an AFO provides the support needed to walk more safely and with less fatigue. As the condition changes over time, the device can be adjusted or represcribed accordingly.

Post-surgical recovery after ankle fusion, tendon repair, or fracture fixation may require a custom AFO to protect the repair during the return to weight-bearing activity.

How It Works

Clinical history.

We ask about your diagnosis, how long you’ve had the problem, what your walking is like now, and what you need to be able to do — whether that’s managing around the house, getting back to work, or returning to a more active lifestyle.

Gait and movement assessment.

We observe you walking and assess the ankle and foot in detail — range of motion, muscle strength, spasticity if present, and how the foot behaves at each phase of the gait cycle.

Casting or 3D scanning

Your foot and lower leg are captured in the corrected position. For AFOs, this step is particularly important — the position the foot is held in during casting directly determines how the finished device controls your gait.

Fabrication

Your AFO is made to your prescription, in the material and design appropriate for your condition. Ready in 2–3 weeks.

Fitting and adjustment

We fit the device, check it in your footwear, and assess your gait with it on. Adjustments are made in-clinic. Most patients return once more in the first few months for fine-tuning as they adapt to wearing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need an AFO brace or a different type of orthosis?

AFO is prescribed when the problem is at the ankle or foot — weakness, instability, or movement control issues that affect walking. If your condition is milder, a custom insole or a shorter brace (like an SMO) may be enough. If it involves the knee as well, a KAFO may be more appropriate. That distinction comes from the assessment, which is why we look at the full picture before prescribing anything.

How long does it take to get an AFO brace in UAE?

From your assessment to picking up your finished AFO is typically 3–4 weeks — around 1 week for the assessment and casting appointment, and 2–3 weeks for fabrication.

How long does it take to get used to an AFO?

Most patients adapt within a few weeks of consistent wear. The first few days can feel unfamiliar — the gait pattern shifts, and muscles that were compensating begin to work differently. We recommend building up wear time gradually and coming back for a follow-up adjustment once you’ve worn it for a few weeks.

Can an AFO help after a stroke?

Yes — AFOs are one of the most commonly used devices in stroke rehabilitation. For patients with foot drop or ankle instability following a stroke, a custom AFO can improve walking speed, reduce the risk of falls, and allow rehabilitation to progress more effectively.
